Instructions on How to Properly Rinse With Mouthwash

Posted .

Your doctor, Dr. James McAllister, encourages you to include rinsing in your oral hygiene routine. It’s best to rinse with antibacterial or fluoride mouthwash that has been approved by the American Dental Association. Make sure to rinse at least once a day. To help you rinse properly, he has the instructions you need, which are:

-Pour 4 teaspoons (20 millimeters) of mouthwash into a cup or into the lid of the mouthwash. You can reduce the amount of mouthwash used if you have a hard time swishing that much liquid.

-Empty the cup by pouring the mouthwash into your mouth.

-Close your lips and swish the liquid around. It’s important to swish for the recommended amount of time listed on the bottle. If needed, use a timer or count in your head to make sure you swish for the appropriate amount of time.

-Gargle the mouthwash occasionally as you swish.

-When the time is up, spit the mouthwash into the sink.
