Are you constantly plagued by painful cold sores? If so, we invite you to visit East Indianapolis Dental Associates to receive treatment for a cold sore in Indianapolis, Indiana.
Also known as fever blisters, cold sores are a viral infection in the form of tiny blisters around your mouth. These blisters form as a result of contracting HSV-1, a contagious herpes simplex virus spread by close contact. When the blisters break, they form a crust over the sore, which usually heals after two to four weeks without leaving a scar. Symptoms of a cold sore include:
- A tingling, itching, or burning sensation around the lip
- Flu-like symptoms such as a fever, sore throat, and muscle aches
- Painful eroded gums and swollen lymph nodes
While the herpes simplex virus is not curable, the blisters can be treated with the help of a dentist. We encourage you to pay us a visit if your symptoms are severe, you have a weakened immune system, or the cold sores are a constant reoccurrence. Dr. James McAllister may recommend the use of an antiviral drug to speed up the healing process. Depending on the type of drug, it may come in the form of a pill, cream, or injection.
